Drawings by Geoff McFetridge at HVW8 in LA

November 23, 2009

STAGES art blogger and woman-on-the-street Wendy Dembo recently visited the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in Los Angeles. The gallery, located just off Melrose Ave. in the heart of West Hollywood, is currently showing drawings from STAGES artist Geoff McFetrridge as part of their exhibition “Michael, Kevin & Geoff.”

We’ll let Wendy describe the show in her own words.

What happens when three old friends with similar art styles join forces for one collaborative show: “Michael, Kevin & Geoff”? If the graphic for the show invite, an upended Neapolitan ice-cream cone, gives us any clue, the answer is to turn our traditional notions of graphic art upside down.

HVW8 Art + Design Gallery’s mandate is to show graphic art made by graphic designers, allowing them to express themselves in a not-necessarily commercial manner. Thus giving the three designers free reign to express themselves as artists.

Michael, Kevin & Geoff all went to Cal Arts and have a long relationship stemming from their time there together. They’ve been meaning to open a store together for ages, but meanwhile we’ll take their show.

Geoff McFetridge focused on drawing the back of snap-back baseball hats, clogs and skulls for this show. Michael Leon also centered on skulls in both prints and sculpture. Kevin Lyons made some witty drawings and cartoons.

Geoff is all over the place: making art, wallpaper and more. In addition to contributing a beautiful work to the STAGES auction, he just finished creating the lovely titles for Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are.

Michael is a graphic designer and former skater who combines his two pastimes to make interesting objects and designs. Kevin is a design director for a fancy NYC agency in addition to having multiple clothing lines and working on experimental graphic projects.

The resulting show is the upshot of what happens when storytelling meets good design. Each work has a familial trait to it, naturally stemming from the trio’s organic relationship.
