Christopher Wool
Operating out of his studios in New York’s Chinatown and in Marfa, Texas, Chicago-born Christopher Wool (b. 1955) produces work that is instantly recognizable for its limited use of color and the artist’s inquisitive approach to methods of mark-making.
Whether applying decorative patterns with paint rollers and rubber stamps or spray paint, or stenciling confrontational phrases in bold, sans-serif blocks of type, Wool makes the process of producing an image as much an issue as the content of that image.

In addition to his iconic text-based work, Wool’s abstract pieces combine hand-painted elements with machine-aided effects — silkscreen, for example — resulting in lively, multilayered experiments, such as his piece for STAGES.
Wool’s work appears in the collections of institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou.
He is represented by Gagosian Gallery and Luhring Augustine, NYC.
